Assistant Retail Manager

Summary

Do you want to work at the coolest museum in town? The International Spy Museum is looking for a recruit to manage the Museum’s Retail Store and shopping experience. The Retail Assistant Manager will work closely with the Store Manager and co-Assistant Managers to provide leadership and support for the Retail Store and Team by coordinating and managing daily sales (in-store and online), staffing, product, and customer service operations to achieve sales and profitability goals. The Retail Assistant Manager will manage department administration including internal communication, payroll, and training, as well as support to Store Manager and Retail Buyers.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in overseeing daily sales operations and in supervising team of up to 20 Sales Associates. Analyze operational needs and goals, delegate tasks as needed, ensure adequate staffing to assist customers and create excellent shopping experience.
  • Assist in hiring, training, developing team of Sales Associates and Retail Leads. Provide on-the-job training and coaching to store staff in customer service skills and procedures, shop operations, product knowledge, inventory management systems, and POS. Ensure team is delivering excellent customer service by teaching and leading by example.
  • Assist the Retail Department in achieving daily, monthly, and annual sales and productivity goals. Generate daily and weekly sales reports. Assist in managing the operational budget, payroll, and monitor expenses.
  • Perform daily opening, closing, and security procedures for the store. Responsible for accountability, custody, and distribution of funds used in the retail operation. Reconcile funds and prepare fund control documents. Prepare and analyze reports of daily sales and deposits and ensure proper documentation of merchandise receipts and transfers.
  • Greet and assist customers by meeting The International Spy Museum’s standard of customer service and creating a rewarding customer experience.  Respond accurately, courteously, and promptly to customer inquiries, enhancing customer satisfaction.
  • Implement merchandising efforts to maximize sales, increase sales per customer and inventory turn.  Oversee the care and appearance of the display and stock areas and the flow of inventory to the retail floor.  Ensure that the selling floor is fully stocked, pricing is correct, signage is accurate and appropriately displayed with merchandise.
  • Advise Management and Buying team on the quality and condition of merchandise received from vendors; make recommendations about merchandise based on requests or comments from customers. Foster a creative environment for new product ideas.
  • Serve as main focal point for the point-of-sale system used for the retail operation, updating, and modifying the system, and training staff as necessary. Serve as liaison with the Manager of Information Technology and the POS contractor, resolving system and operational problems as they occur.
  • Assist in coordinating and preparing staff and stock areas for annual physical inventory. Assist in the development of plans to implement the inventory process; organize and assign staff and workload and reconcile inventory in accordance with established procedures.
  • Provide back-up assistance to Receiving & Shipping Manager by receiving, ticketing, storing, and expediting merchandise to the selling floor. Preparing packages by processing phone and in-store shipping order as needed.
  • Administer and monitor safety awareness. Ensure all safety guidelines are followed.  Implement policies and practices to minimize store losses due to accidents or theft. 
  • Participate in Museum committees as assigned or requested (i.e. IT Taskforces, Values Team, Diversity Advisory Council, Internal Events Committee).
  • Participate in and contribute to weekly manager meetings and quarterly staff meetings.
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as required or assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • High School degree or equivalent.  College degree or related college coursework in business, marketing, retail, and/or hospitality management preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a retail leadership/management/supervisory role. 
  • Direct experience in staffing and scheduling, training, cash management, merchandising, and experience utilizing and maintaining retail POS systems.
  • College degree or related college coursework in business, marketing, retail, merchandising or related field preferred.
  • Proficient in Outlook, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel 

Skills Preferred

  • Experience with rolling out/training on a POS system.
  • Knowledge of customer service practices and principles.
  • Excellent people skills.
  • Knowledge of inventory stocking and control practices.
  • Knowledge of visual merchandising practices and principles.
  • Knowledge of POS and other automated systems that support retail operations.
  • Knowledge of security standards and procedures that support the physical and financial integrity of retail operations.

Special Considerations

This is a Full-time salaried position requiring the ability to work nights and weekends. Required to work some holidays as dictated by the needs of the business. 

Must be flexible and work as a team player within the department and museum.

The work generally requires extended periods of standing and walking, will require a moderate amount of bending, and the ability to pick up, carry, lift, and move stock weighing up to 20 pounds. Moving merchandise from other locations within the Museum utilizing carts and dollies will be required.
